READING
Independent Reading (or Silent Reading in class) is an integral part of my reading program. Students may read anything appropriate for school. This includes: magazines, graphic novels, non-fiction, novels, comics...whatever grabs the student's attention. The purpose is to read for enjoyment. This is a struggle for some kids, so CHOICE is very important. (See tab for requirements.)
About every six weeks or so, I will assign a book report. Book reports are done primarily at home and are project based. There is often a genre assigned to introduce students to books they might not normally be drawn to. Please allow students to complete work on their own. If you are creative, giving tips and teaching them new skills is always a plus.
CLOSE READING is a Common Core skill taught and used across curriculum. It is used when reading to write summaries, reports or when answering questions. Basically, it is:

- Reading the text twice slowly
- Identifying the "gist" or main idea of a passage or paragraph using 2-4 words without details
- Identifying unfamiliar words and trying to figure them out using context
- Identifying key words which may help to answer questions or write summaries
